Wētā FX worked their magic over Michael Gracey’s ambitious vision for Better Man. Regent Street and a Melbourne set transformed in action to become the backdrop for an extraordinary musical number, all done in one shot. The 3 minutes and 42 seconds scene is known for the seamless transitions involving 5 digital costume changes, 5,334 frames, and a vibrant ensemble of 500 dancers.
To achieve this spectacle, detailed planning was necessary. Wētā FX mapped every meter of Regent Street over four evenings to ensure the visual effects perfectly matched the previs. The digital costume transitions, synchronized movements, and atmospheric details all worked in harmony to enhance the immersive experience.
This yields an amazing, flawlessly done sequence that represents Wētā FX mastery over the synthesis of visual effects with live action storytelling. Breakdown of dedication and innovation are present in this section of one of the best scenes of Better Man.
