With IF, Framestore showcases its skills in creating characters for a movie featuring more than 42 Imaginary Friends, each uniquely designed to be relatable and seamless with live-action performances. While most blockbuster movies tend to have just a few animated characters, IF challenges the visual storytelling boundaries of having a huge cast of fantastical creatures.
Under VFX Supervisor Chris Lawrence, along with Animation Supervisor Arslan Elver, Framestore backed the creative intentions of John Krasinski as Production VFX Supervisor and Production Animation Director to the work. From the time of storyboarding to character design up to on-set supervision, previs, postvis, and final delivery, Framestore had a full comprehensive involvement at every step of the filmmaking process.
Using their Pre-Production Services (FPS), VisDev, and Design teams in London, Montreal, and Mumbai, Framestore combined live-action with stylized animation in a bold and tactile way. Being the sole VFX provider, they ensured Krasinski had the flexibility to iterate and refine throughout the project, finally delivering a visually stunning and emotionally impactful film that redefines the possibilities of animated characters in live-action storytelling.
