Wētā FX‘s visual effects for Alien: Romulus combine digital and practical expertise to create the Oscar-nominated movie. The crew used computer graphics to incrementally improve the Offspring creature while keeping a realistic, grounded look, all while adhering to the evocative aesthetic of the classic Alien movies.
Trillions of assets, volumetrics, and geometry were needed to depict the Romulus space station’s catastrophic descent into the planet in one of the movie’s most intricate scenes. In contrast, the Xenomorphs’ horrifying assault included more than 100 live acid blood simulations in zero gravity in a single shot.
Wētā FX’s methodical approach resulted in a visually stunning experience that skillfully combines cutting-edge visual effects methods with traditional sci-fi terror.
