With its stunning destruction and fluid dynamics, Wētā FX pushed the limits of simulation artistry in Alien: Romulus. Trillions of individual assets are painstakingly built to produce a realistic, chaotic collapse as the Romulus station is ripped apart by freezing debris as it sinks into the planet’s rings.
A special challenge that required sophisticated fluid models to portray its unexpected velocity in space was zero-gravity acid Xenomorph blood, which added to the intensity. The realism was further enhanced by a quick decompression event, which gave each scene a visceral, immersive quality. Combining technical mastery with the uncanny beauty of the Alien universe made this project a dream come true for FX artists.
